America was discovered in 1492 by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. He was the first Western explorer to set foot on American soil thereby opening the American route for massive Western influx and explorations during his 'Four Voyages' from 1492-1502.
Americans get a day off work on October 10 to celebrate Columbus Day. It's an annual holiday that commemorates the day on October 12, 1492.
