TRUMP, PUTIN BOTH SEEK TO STRENGTHEN THEIR NUCLEAR CAPABILITY

 The US president-elect Donald Trump on Thursday tweeted that the US must greatly strengthen and expend its nuclear capability 

"The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes," Trump tweeted late Thursday morning.

Hours earlier in Moscow, Putin said in a defense speech in Moscow that Russia needs to "enhance the combat capability of strategic nuclear forces, primarily by strengthening missile complexes that will be guaranteed to penetrate existing and future missile defense systems."

Trump's tweet came less than 24 hours after the President-elect met with three US Air Force generals for a discussion that was expected to include talk of modernizing the US nuclear triad, according to a US military official, meaning the ability to deploy nuclear weapons from land, sea and air.

RUSSIAN LEADERS ATTEND FUNERAL SERVICE OF SLAIN AMBASSADOR TO TURKEY

 Russian leaders attended a civil funeral service for the slain ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, at the Russian Foreign Ministry building on Thursday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, speakers of both parliament houses Valentina Matviyenko and Vyacheslav Volodin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and officials from the presidential administration, parliamentary deputies and diplomats attended the funeral.

Karlov was shot dead by a gunman on Monday at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

Lavrov handed a Gold Star medal of the Hero of Russia to Karlov's family, the highest prize of the country, awarded to the ambassador posthumously.

After a religious funeral service conducted by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill in the Christ the Savior Cathedral in central Moscow, Karlov will be buried in one of the cemeteries in the capital.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria on Wednesday raided some companies in Onitsha and its environs, arresting some persons suspected to be producing fake products.

At Bendusco International Agency Limited and DSK Golding City Investment Limited in Awada, Obosi, near Onitsha, a Chinese, Ning Tiandong, suspected to be an accomplice working for the two companies was arrested

One of the directors of the company, Benjamin Nwizu, was also arrested.

 

SON evacuated the suspected fake products of the companies in three trucks.

Some of the products allegedly adulterated by the companies were toothbrushes and shaving sticks.

Led by its director of operations, Mr. Felix Nyado, SON raided one other factory at 33 area of Onitsha were six persons were arrested.

Speaking to journalists, Nwizu denied that his company was producing substandard products.

He said his company had dragged SON before a Federal High Court in Awka where the court ordered the parties in the suit to maintain the status quo.

Nwizu said his company had an order from the National Assembly restricting SON from disturbing its business.

Addressing journalists after the raid, Nyado described Nwizu as a serial liar.

He said that Nwizu’s claims were false and denied that SON was in court with Nwizu’s company.

“He is a serial liar. We are not in court with him and I don’t think any court will restrict a regulatory body from performing its functions.

“We are an Act of the parliament; the National Assembly cannot stop us from doing our work.

“This company is producing substandard products and we say they cannot do that because the health of the people is being endangered.

“Take for instance, the rule says you must produce toothpaste with virgin raw materials, but this man and his company are producing such products with recycled materials. We say no to that and he is talking about a court order and an authority from the National Assembly.

“Did the court and the National Assembly give him the authority to fake and produce substandard products?”

He said the Chinese and Nwizu would be handed over to the police.

In spite of a passionate plea by a housewife to the court to save her 18-year-old marriage, an Agege Customary Court in Lagos granted the prayers of her 50-year-old husband and businessman, Kingsley Onyenobi, and severed the relationship.

The estranged husband said he bought a brand new car for her only for her to give out the car to her church pastor on the pretext of “sowing seed”.

The court ruled that allegations of infidelity and threat to life brought against the woman by the husband were weighty enough to warrant the dissolution of the marriage.

The President of the court, Mr Phillip Williams, who handed down the verdict, said he was fully convinced that the couple could no longer live together as husband and wife.

He said, “The two of you should go your separate ways without any molestation or harassment,” he ruled.

“The court has no choice than to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband.”

The petitioner had on February 11 filed a petition against his wife, Chioma, citing lack of care, infidelity and threat to life.

The mother of two, who is also businesswoman, denied the allegations and pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage, saying “I still love my husband.”

She said, “Please help me to beg him, I am not ready to leave my husband because I still love him.”

Earlier, the petitioner told the court that the wife had not given him peace of mind.

He described the woman as careless and uncaring as her attitude led to the death of their set of twins.

The estranged husband said he bought a brand new car for her only for her to give out the car to her church pastor on the pretext of “sowing seed”.

“I injected millions of naira into her business and she could not give proper account till date; my wife is wasteful.’’

In her defence, the respondent told the court that when she went for her church convention and the Holy Spirit told her not to go back home with all she brought to the venue.

She said she could not stay at home most of the time because of the spiritual war the petitioner and his family had been waging against her.

“My pastor advised me to leave the house for some time.”

FIREWORK EXPLOSIVE KILLS 31 AS MEXICANS PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION.

 

On Tuesday at a popular fireworks market near Mexico City, a massive explosion killed at least 31 people and injured 70 others.

 
The explosion took place at San Pablito market in the city of Tultepec, about 30 kilometers north of the capital while several shoppers were packed buying fireworks for Christmas and New Year Celebrations.


Emergency crews needed to wait several hours for the site to be safe enough for them to go in and look for victims.

Eruviel Avila, the governor of the state of Mexico, said forensics teams are having to use genetic analysis to try to identify some of the dead.

Of the injured, 21 had been released from the hospital by early Wednesday.

 
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto used Twitter to send his condolences to the families of those killed and to wish a speedy recovery for the injured.

PUERTO RICO WILL RUN SHORT OF MONEY BY FEBRUARY- GOVERNOR -ELECT

 
  Puerto Rico's governor-elect is warning that the U.S. territory will run out of money by February to pay public employees.
Ricardo Rossello said Monday that only about $147 million remains in the island's coffers. His announcement comes amid ongoing transition hearings in which Puerto Rico public agencies are presenting their current financial status and accomplishments for the past four years.

Rossello said his administration will investigate whether there was any negligence involved in the way funds were managed in the past four years. He said he will sign several administrative orders targeting the economic crisis after being sworn in on Jan. 2.
Puerto Rico is facing a decade-long economic crisis and a nearly $70 billion public debt load that Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla has said is unpayable.

CHINA FIGHTS HEAVY SMOG WITH RED ALERTS

The sky was gray across much of north China on Saturday as at least 24 cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, have activated red alerts to address the pollution.

The measures included car restrictions on roads, suspension of construction and classes for kindergartens and primary schools as well as reduced emissions for factories.

Beijing activated its first red alert for smog this winter as the air began to turn hazy on Friday, ending several days of blue sky.

Kindergartens and primary schools have been ordered to suspend classes from Monday to Wednesday in Beijing due to the persistent heavy smog. All road construction and maintenance sites have been ordered to stop work.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, the PM2.5 density exceeded 200 in the downtown areas of the capital, indicating the air is heavily polluted, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center.

Beijing's environmental and housing authorities have strengthened inspection of vehicles, construction sites and factories, punishing those that fail to meet the requirements under the red alert.

The air quality index (AQI) readings at some sites in Tianjin, a northern port city neighboring Beijing, exceeded 300 on Saturday morning, indicating serious air pollution.

Tianjin dispatched government inspection teams to check whether response measures have been implemented by companies, construction sites and drivers.

The smog is forecast to be dispersed on Wednesday night by cold air.

Nigeria’s inflation rate hits 18.48% in November - Agency

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), says Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased to 18.48 per cent (year-in-year) in November from 18.33 per cent recorded in October.

The CPI, which measures inflation, is 0.15 per cent points higher from the points recorded in October.

A report released by the NBS in Abuja on Thursday noted that increases were recorded in all Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP), divisions that yield the Headline Index.

“Communication and Insurance recorded the slowest pace of growth in November, growing at 5.61 per cent and 6.76 per cent year-on-year respectively.

“The Food Sub Index inched higher to 17.19 per cent (year-on-year) in November, up by 0.10 percentage points from rates recorded in October (17.09 per cent).

“During the month, all major food sub-indexes increased with Soft Drinks recording the slowest pace of increase at 7.76 per cent year on year.’’

According to the report, price movements recorded by the All Items less farm produce or Core Sub index rose by 0.10 percent to 18.20 per cent (year-on-year) in November.

The report stated that the figure recorded in October was 18.10 per cent.

It stated that during the month, the highest increases were seen in housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.

“Increases were also seen in clothing materials and other articles of clothing, books, liquid fuel, passenger transport by air, motor cycles and shoes and other footwear.’’

On a month-on-month basis, the report stated that the Headline index increased 0.78 percentage points in November.

It stated that the figure was 0.05 percentage points lower than the rate recorded in October (0.83 per cent).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Nigeria’s inflation rate increased, this time marginally, for the 13th consecutive month.
